If Robots could Eat: A Pedagogy on Late Capitalist Eating and the Future of Food Design

2022

Interactive journalism, html, css, java script, speculative design

Capitalist dining, however you call it, is an incredibly abstracted yet pervasively prevalent ritual within the daily American consumption. Overtime, this ritual of consumption has transformed into a new system meant for profit; a world of corporatist capitalocene. As of 2022, society (especially the United States) has entered late capitalism where the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated obsolete capitalism which has been taking over the world since the late 1800s.

In terms of profit over human lives, we are simply spectators, witnessing wealthier western nations hoard vaccines as those living in developing countries suffer. As far as food goes, food systems are incredibly flawed. Hunger is still incredibly prevalent to those in the “bottom of the triangle”, but poverty is exponentially increasing while the rise of neo-feudalism is slowly becoming a reality; modern democratic states are reversing back to th elite-takeover of systems of finances after the financialization of the economy.
